The National Center for Education Statistics today released Revenues and Expenditures for Public Elementary and Secondary Education: School Year 2014-15 (Fiscal Year 2015) First Look. Apart from the title being so long that it’s clumsy, it does have some comparative data that may be helpful as you discuss public education in Utah. Here are some highlights:

  • Utah is no longer at the bottom for revenue per pupil. That distinction now belongs to Idaho -- $7,858 compared to Utah’s $8,068. (p. 6)
  • Utah, however remains at the bottom for per-pupil expenditure -- $6,751 compared to a national average of $11,454. NY is the high at $20,744; ID is next lowest after UT at $6,899. (p. 12)
  • Taken as a whole, Title I spending accounts for $140 of Utah’s $6,751 in per-pupil spending, or 2 percent. National average is 2.5 percent. (p. 18, 19)
  • Utah spends 63 percent of its per-pupil funding on instruction compared to 60 percent nationally. (p. C 10, 11)
  • Only Hawaii (which has but one school district) spends less per-pupil on district administration than Utah. Utah spends $66 (1 percent) and Hawaii $53. National average is $222 (2 percent). (p. C 10, 11)
