Nebo Education Foundation Gives May Grants to Teachers

Submitted by lana.hiskey on

The Nebo Education Foundation board met in May, to discuss the many grants and needs across the district. This Foundation Board functions through generous donations made by individuals and businesses as well as fundraisers where all the money goes to educate students in Nebo School District.

One fund-raising effort is the annual “Green Fever” golf tournament that helps fund these various grants throughout the year. It was held on Wednesday, May 16, 2018, and would not have happened without the generous support of so many businesses and individuals. Thank you to all those that so generously supported Nebo students.

Congratulations to the following teachers that continue to inspire the minds of students.

Spanish Fork High – Deon Youd
Deon Youd, English teacher at Spanish Fork High, said, “I am excited and humbled to receive this grant from the Nebo Education Foundation. The money will be used to get new and updated materials in the hands of our AP English Language students as well as other students. Students will delve into readings about our world; they will become more critical thinkers and be better prepared to take their place in our society. The AP Language curriculum focuses heavily on non-fiction texts and real world issues. Our world is changing at such a rapid pace that, as a teacher, I am constantly looking for new readings for my students. With this grant, I will be able to use updated texts and methods to help my students grow and prepare, not only for the AP exam or even college, but for playing an active role in our community.”

Sage Creek Elementary – Julie Nielson
“I am so grateful to be receiving a Nebo Education Foundation Grant for the purchase of two Chromebooks. My students will be using the Chromebooks daily to review skills in language arts, reading, and math. There are wonderful online websites such as ABCya, Starfall, and Sesame Street that my children will now have access to. I love using Chromebooks in my classroom to enhance learning and to help my students stay engaged. I am excited to be able to integrate more technology in my classroom because of this grant. Once again, I want to thank the Nebo Education Foundation for this grant. Thank you,” stated Julie Nielson, first-grade teacher at Sage Creek Elementary.

Larsen Elementary – Katie Berns
Katie Berns, fifth-grade teacher at Larsen Elementary said, “I am very excited to be able to purchase science supplies to help enrich my lessons. By having more resources for hands-on activities, my students will develop a deeper understanding of the fifth grade science core. Because of the grant, my students will be able to create circuits and test items to determine if they are conductors of insulators. They will also use the resources to learn about static charges, magnetic fields, adaptations, and many more concepts. Thanks you!”

Spanish Oaks – Emily Monroe
“I am truly grateful for this grant! This was my first grant, so I wasn't sure if I would qualify or not. The process was great and I had a lot of support along the way. I will use the $618 dollars, plus matching funds, to purchase 6 Chromebooks for my classroom. These will replace the old computers I have been using. They were computers that the District was getting rid of when they updated the school's computer labs. The computers I have now are too old to be supported by the District and therefore, they have a lot of issues. I am a Special Education Teacher and my students need a lot of support on a variety of grade levels. These new Chromebooks will help them with their typing skills to improve the SAGE Assessment scores. It will also help to improve their academics with online supports such as Imagine Learning, XtraMath, Prodigy and others. I can't wait until these Chromebooks arrive, and my students are just as excited as I am. Each day, they ask me if the Chromebooks have arrived. Soon I'll be able to say YES!” exclaimed Emily Monroe, teacher at Spanish Oaks Elementary.

Oakridge – Tasha Lewis
Tasha Lewis, teacher at Oakridge said, “The Aerogarden will be helpful to my students in a variety of ways such as provide sensory, science and communication opportunities. I will be able to present real life science lessons and they will be able to explore using all their senses. Even my visually impaired students will be able to smell, touch and feel the dirt and plants they grow and eventually even taste the produce. I am excited for my students to have this experience with the Aerogarden. Thank you!!”

Foothills – Elyssa Marzan
“We are absolutely thrilled and extremely grateful to receive this grant that the Nebo Education Foundation has given us! We will be purchasing Chromebooks for 3rd grade. Our goal is to have full class sets of Chromebooks for all 3rd grade classes, and now we are one step closer. We love that we will be able to enhance and further our education through the use of technology. There will be many wonderful ways to engage every 3rd grader in reading, writing, and math. Again, thank you so much for this fantastic opportunity.” stated Elyssa Marzan, third-grade teacher at Foothills Elementary.

Wilson Elementary – Betsy Eckton
Betsy Eckton, instructional coach at Wilson Elementary said, “Wilson Elementary is thrilled to be the recipient of the generous $1,750 grant from the Nebo Foundation! This grant will permit Wilson Elementary to make considerable progress towards its goal of building and renewing the school's leveled library. Specifically, with monies from this grant, Wilson is purchasing a collection of more than 864 books (6 copies each of 144 titles), which will provide valuable resources for teachers of all grade levels to use as they offer small-group instruction in literacy. We so greatly appreciate the Nebo Foundation in providing this grant, which will serve the students of Wilson Elementary for many years to come!”

Maple Mountain High – Jethro Gillespie
Jethro Gillespie, teacher at Maple Mountain High, said, “With these exhibition panels, we will be able to showcase more student visual artworks at MMHS. Until now, we've been using the portable art gallery (also made possible through a Nebo Foundation grant in 2010), which is made from plywood. This old gallery wall system is heavy and awkward to move around, but these new panels will benefit our school and thousands of students for years to come with a more lightweight, reliable and professional system from which our school community will be able to connect with our visual arts program. I anticipate more visibility for our community, which can engender more confidence and experience with students. Thank you so much!”

Foothills – Elyssa Marzan

The Nebo Education Foundation is composed of 20 volunteer board members who live in cities serviced by Nebo School District. Board members meet each month to review and award grant requests, consider fund-raising avenues and other items that advance the educational opportunities for Nebo School District students. Many of the donations received are for selected projects, yet a substantial amount is available for the greatest need. Greatest need monies are considered for grants submitted by area schools.

Anyone interested in the Nebo Education Foundation or who wish to make a donation for education is encouraged to contact Lana Hiskey by email lana [dot] hiskey [at] nebo [dot] edu, by phone 801-354-7400, or mail 350 South Main, Spanish Fork, UT 84660.
