Nebo School District's Troy Peterson, principal at Mt. Nebo Junior High, was honored during the Nebo School District's prinicpoal meeting as the Secondary Principal of the Year by Craig Harvey with Horace Mann. This is the first annual Crystal Owl award given.

Those that nominated Troy stated the following:

"Troy is a phenomenal administrator. He cares about kids and he is ALWAYS kind. I was only his Dean of Students but he included me in all conversations and decisions. I never felt like I worked "under" him, instead I worked "with" him. He validates everyone, and he never talks bad about people behind their backs. He is a man of true integrity and I'm grateful for the year I could glean from his wisdom."

"Troy is an inspirational leader. He sees the best in everyone and supports them to build capacity and get better. He is visionary, supportive, and positive. Troy loves his students and builds positive relationships with them. He is a change agent and helps his teams collaborate at high levels. He understands the value of literacy in all subject areas and focuses on helping all of his students improve their literacy skills."

"Troy is truly an outstanding principal, worthy in every regard to be recognized as Nebo's Secondary Principal of the Year. I have known Troy from the beginning of my administrative career when I served as his assistant principal at Diamond Fork Jr. High School. During that time, I really got to know him, see how he works with people and observe up close his outstanding leadership qualities. I consider Troy to be a mentor in the truest sense of the word – the following is just a very short summary of what I watched and learned from Troy about creating a school culture that engenders success for student learning. He uses his soft spoken but powerful presence to establish a positive shared vision of learning and then he works hard to make sure that it is supported through personal interactions with all stakeholders. He builds capacity in his teachers and promotes a robust system of interventions that ensures every student is successful. He is a true leader of learning, he thinks collaboratively, consistently leveraging the synergy of a team for the greater good of students. He works with faculty, staff, parents, and community members to build a culture of caring, responsibility and learning. Troy is truly the consummate professional modeling integrity, fairness, and ethical behavior at all times. Troy sees the good in each individual person and has the ability to bring it out in such a positive way. I have never heard him speak negatively about any parent, student, teacher or any person of the community even when he was dealing with a difficult and complex issue that involved that person. Troy always tells himself the “right story” about others motives. From Troy I learned how to visit with students that were often confrontational and - without judging them - have a productive conversation that helps the student become more successful. Whenever Troy works with students, he focuses on the problem without accusing the individual - the same can be said when he works with faculty and staff. Troy stays abreast of current educational theory through educational journals and books. His gift is that he is able to distill down the best ideas from research based practice - those that will complement his vision for the school. He then seamlessly puts these innovative ideas into practice. Because of this ability, he has been a change leader in Nebo School District and is widely respected and admired by his colleagues. Because of these attributes and abilities plus many others not mentioned, I believe that Troy exemplifies what Principal of the Year is intended to stand for. You can count on Troy to be calm under fire and help any difficult situation become better. He is student focused and success oriented. I am pleased to recommend my good friend, Troy Peterson, for this honorable award."

"He is on the top of his game! He uses his up-to-date knowledge to be ahead of the game and drive his schools to success."

"Troy is an exceptional leader. He has a clear vision of how to best help students succeed and how he wants our school to function. Most of all he is patient, willing to help and share his wisdom, advice, and support. I have learned so much from him--he inspired me to pursue administration and I feel so lucky have such an amazing mentor. He truly wants what is best for his faculty and students and it is apparent in his interactions with them."
