Before COVID-19, the Nebo Education Foundation met to discuss submitted educational grants for students in Nebo School District. One of the goals of the foundation is to fund worthwhile projects in the district that provide resources to enrich student learning. The Nebo Education Foundation functions through generous donations made by individuals and businesses.

Brian Rowley, board member, said, “The funds donated by our generous benefactors enable our fine educators to enhance both traditional and technology based methods of teaching.  We could not provide this assistance without the donations we receive from our communities, corporate, and private donations.”

Congratulations to the following teachers that continue to inspire the minds of students.

Wilson Elementary – Karen Haskell
Karen Haskell, second-grade teacher at Wilson Elementary, said, “Yay!! I am so excited to have received a grant from the Nebo Education Foundation.  The chromebooks in our classroom are so outdated and need replacing.  In our classroom we use chromebooks across the curriculum.  These new computers will be a huge asset to add to our learning environment. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you Nebo Education Foundation!”

Santaquin Elementary – Marlayne Haward
Marlayne Harward, third-grade teacher at Santaquin Elementary, said, “We want to express our  thanks  to the Nebo Education Foundation for supplying the third grade teachers at Santaquin Elementary with teacher manuals and mentor texts to support writing.  We have been sharing one set  between the three teachers.  The program is wonderful and we value it enough that we are willing to share. It has not been easy.  Our students are making improvements that we attribute to good teaching that came from the support we have found in "Being A Writer."  We look forward for many years to come of teaching students to express themselves in writing. Thank you!”

Salem Junior – Stacy Johnson
Stacy Johnson, math teacher at Salem Junior High, said, “The grant I received along with matching funds from Salem Jr. High will buy calculators and compasses for my classroom. These tools are necessary in my 9th grade class. I currently do not have enough of either tool. I have one class of 40 students. This class must share the tools. I am excited to have enough to go around. Thank you Nebo Education Foundation on Salem Jr. High for matching funds for my needed supplies.”

Salem Hills – Corom Hughes
“In receiving this grant, I have done a lot of research into the mental health benefits of  livening up the area as we surround ourselves with greenery. As I've conducted my own personal research, I have found that students are much more willing to discuss mental health issues when they feel comfortable and safe. I have often brought students, who have a hard time opening up, to go hang out in the greenhouse just to change the scenery. Without fail, every time, the student has opened up. We worked out a treatment plan to better serve the students. The fulfillment of this grant is helping bring that safe serenity into the school for all of our students to partake in. Previous to my time working in the school system, I worked in the jail system. While working with the incarcerated, I often felt the influence of the blank brick walls and the depressing nature they carried. I often wished for a way to bring in greenery as I know that bringing this light in would change the environment that I worked in from a depressing influence to more of a healing space. After spending time in the school system, I began to recognize the tendencies of the depressing environment of blank brick walls seep into the student population as I once recognized they did in the jail system. I knew there was something that we could do to improve the space to be healing. I am so grateful for this grant as it will help influence our environment and change the mental health state of our student body,” stated Corom Hughes, social worker at Salem Hills High.
