DeAnn Nielsen, principal of Maple Mountain High in Nebo School District, was
honored with the Secondary Crystal Owl Award during a Nebo administrator training on Zoom. This award is provided by Craig Harvey through Horace Mann.

Colleagues and teachers said the following about Maple Mountain High’s Principal, DeAnn Nielsen:

“DeAnn is an outstanding instructional leader, mentor, and administrator. She is passionate about student learning and building positive relationships with students, teachers, parents, and her colleagues.  She is insightful, a problem-solver, and committed to excellence. DeAnn is everyone's greatest fan and a friend to all. She picks you up when you are feeling overwhelmed and helps renew your faith in yourself and in the good of others. DeAnn's positivity and example makes a difference in all of our lives.”

“DeAnn is so deserving of being the Nebo School District Principal of the Year.  The things I learned from DeAnn while I worked with her:
You treat everyone kindly,
Students' needs and learning comes first,
Your example can teach those around you,
Integrity is the reason why people come to you for help,
Curriculum matters,
Always look for ways to improve as a person, school and community, and
Have high standards for everyone.

These are only to name a few.  I appreciate all she taught me as I worked with her.  Congrats, DeAnn, on a deserving award.”

“I consider myself lucky to call DeAnn Nielsen a leader, a colleague, and a friend. As an English teacher at Maple Mountain High School, I knew that I could go to DeAnn with any concern. It is crucial for teachers to know that their leader cares about them not only as real human beings with lives outside of school, but also as educators striving to meet the needs of students. While DeAnn was my colleague when I was teaching at MMHS, when I became an assistant principal, DeAnn became a trusted source when I need  experienced administrator advice. There really isn’t an admin question that I feel is too dumb to ask DeAnn, and while I know that she certainly may laugh at me and my question, I also know she will be laughing in a way that will help me to laugh at myself. I think one of DeAnn’s strongest traits is her ability and her desire to laugh. She honestly wants MMHS to be a place where the students, the faculty, the staff, and the community are happy. She wants people to want to be at school. She is amazing as a leader, a colleague, and as a friend because she cares for others, she is a happy fountain of administrative knowledge, and she has the ability to make people feel safe, so they may laugh with her.”

Congratulations to Principal DeAnn Nielsen of Maple Mountain High School in Nebo School District. Thank you for being a Nebo Hero!
