The third time’s the charm. This past year, Former Governor Gary Herbert planned to visit Spring Lake Elementary, but it was canceled because of one of the biggest snow storms that year to hit Utah County closed schools for the day. Then COVID-19 pandemic hit and that delayed more plans. However, this past week, Former Governor Gary Herbert delighted Spring Lake students with a visit. All the fifth-graders were able to be present and ask questions. The rest of the school watched a Zoom conference from their classrooms.

Former Governor Herbert told stories about his personal life saying that he is related to Benjamin Franklin, eleven generations back his grandmother and Benjamin’s grandmother were sisters. He also mentioned that he was never very interested in politics when he was young and in fact was really quite shy. Herbert ran for the Orem City Council and lost by 36 votes. He then served as the Utah County Commissioner before he became the Lt. Governor to Jon Huntsman Junior.

“Never miss voting!” exclaimed former Governor Herbert. He described the various forms of government including the Legislative, Judicial, and Executive branches. It is a check and balance system that works well. As governor, he directed 26 departments including the DMV, education, and health to name a few. “To get a good job, each student has to have a good education!” exclaimed former Governor Herbert. He emphasized this again and again throughout his presentation. The students enjoyed his eight Ws–“Work Will Win When Wishy, Washy, Wishing Won’t!” Former Governor Herbert reminded and asked the fifth-grade students, “We have a great future. You are the hope of the future. Will you be ready?”

Congratulations to Stacey Durfee for answering this week’s “Where are we Wednesday?” challenge sponsored by Wiggy Wash.
