Libraries always remind me that there are good things in this world!

Principal David Knudsen thanked the Nebo Board of Education for the opportunity to present and showcase some talented students. He introduced Allison Mower, the school librarian. Valley View’s library is a bit different than the traditional ones.

Six students spoke to the Board about how the library helps them with learning, and how the library helps them do well in school.

“There are many reasons why the library is useful and incredible. I’m going to talk about two of them. One of the reasons is that it helps me to learn by giving me a location to access information. A really cool librarian makes our student body feel comfortable asking questions. It's really cool to have a wide variety of books and authors that not only help me understand how people think in the world but show the extent of different types of writing and literature,” said Eli Platt, a seventh-grade student. “The second reason is that the library is my motivation for going to school. I like school, but the library is my happy place. I go to school early every day to go to the library. At recess and during lunch, my friends and I go to the library to read and to talk to the absolutely awesome librarian. Thank You!”

Ty Wilson, a sixth-grade student, said, “I like the library because 1) There are a variety of activities to do like playing with the robots, building with blocks and Legos, reading different books, and playing chess and checkers. 2) In the library I get to learn with a hands-on approach and use the creative side of my brain. 3) Instead of looking at a screen, I am able to do hands-on activities. 4) The best thing about the library is the librarian. 5) I am thankful that the school has such a good library–one with great window views. It is one of my favorite places at school.”

“The library has helped me very much. I have a reading disability called dyslexia. Last year was really hard, but the library really helped me through that time with all these amazing books. I even got to buy some really cool books at the book fair. The librarian is super and I’m very glad that the library is open at lunch so I can read even more,” stated Heath Ison, a seventh-grade student.

Abi Ballentyne, a seventh-grade student, said, “The library has helped me learn in so many ways. One way is through the Battle of the Books where I learned teamwork. If I do my part, it builds the team up. The library also helps me challenge my creativity. For example, in the library, we can design jewelry to put in the glow forge which makes the jewelry on wood or leather–like these earrings. Creativity supports my learning in every class.”

Other students that spoke to the Nebo School Board of Education were: sixth-grade student, Loralei Halloway and seventh-grade student, Willianson Espana.

The band students played two pieces called: "The Mighty 8th" by Steve Graves and the "Dragon Slayer" by Rob Grice.  The students worked hard to learn these pieces so quickly under the direction of Daniel Stolworthy, the band teacher.

Mr. Stolworthy exclaimed, “The kids loved getting to perform!”

Congratulations to Doug Lai for answering this week’s “Where are we Wednesday?” sponsored by Wiggy Wash.
