The Nebo Education Foundation is composed of 20 volunteer board members who live in cities serviced by Nebo School District.  Board members meet each month to review and award grant requests, consider fund-raising avenues and other items that advance the educational opportunities for Nebo School District students. Many of the donations received are for selected projects, yet a substantial amount is available for the greatest need.  Greatest need monies are considered for grants submitted by area schools.

“That’s what the foundation is all about – to give our students the best educational opportunities possible through classroom grants,” said Lana Hiskey, executive director.

Congratulations to the following teachers that continue to bless the lives of students.

Salem Hills High – Zac Trotter
Thank you again for the grant money to purchase the needed technology. There are many career specific apps and technology used in the theatre world and they are relying more and more on them each year to produce new and innovative performances,” stated Zac Trotter, a theatre teacher at Salem Hills High. “One of my goals at Salem Hills is to train and give the students opportunities to learn on the same equipment used in college and career. I want them to be immediately put to work when they get there. This MacBook Pro will be used to help facilitate two parts of that goal: First, it will allow acting students to film and produce audition tapes, demo reels, and highlight videos using Adobe Premiere to send to colleges and casting directors.  Second, it will be used to create and run the sound design of our productions. The apps Q-Lab and Reaper are industry standards; the students will be using these same programs when they enter college and the professional industry. Thank you again, and we are eager to get to work!”

Foothills Elementary – Pamela Roberts
“In Nebo District, we try very hard to take advantage of  technological advances in education even in third grade. The trick comes in being able to provide enough equipment so that every student can participate at the same time. Our classes are very large and equipment is costly. Our third grade was struggling with having enough headphones of a good quality that fit and worked properly. We were blessed with a generous grant from Nebo Education Foundation that was matched by our principal, Angela Stoddard, that will help us provide that for our students. It will be nice to be able to focus on content rather than on equipment problems. Thank you Nebo Education Foundation!” exclaimed Pamela Roberts, a third-grade teacher at Foothills Elementary.

Mt. Loafer Elementary – Jill Hanks
Jill Hanks, a facilitator at Mt. Loafer, said, “Our Tales for Teaching: Character Building Literature Kit will supplement our instruction in character building while integrating quality children's literature. Teachers at our school will be able to use these resources to help build and support positive character traits including friendship, respect, responsibility, and caring. These books will be enjoyed by all of our students for years to come. Thank you for supporting Mt. Loafer teachers and students with this generous donation!”

Spanish Oaks Elementary – Susan Phelps
“I am so grateful and excited to receive a grant from the Nebo Education Foundation for a Chromebook cart for our first grade team.  This grant will enable us to have a cart in each classroom so that we can charge our Chromebooks that we use at various times throughout the day.  Too often, because we don't have enough charging stations for our new Chromebooks, the battery would not be charged and students would be frustrated as their power would shut down in the middle of their work.  Our first graders are required to be on i-ready reading every day.  This program as well as other reading and academic applications that we are encouraged to utilize in our classrooms require the use of Chromebooks.  Having a place to store and charge our Chromebooks every day is necessary to facilitate consistent use of the Chromebooks.  It also helps to extend the life of our current Chromebooks by providing a protected place to store them.  We appreciate all those who have made this grant possible and provide greater learning experiences and opportunities for our students.” said Susan Phelps, a second-grade teacher at Spanish Oaks Elementary.

Springville High – Cathy Richins
Cathy Richins, an English teacher at Springville High said, “As an English teacher, I try many different ways to help my students understand the value of learning how the English language works. So many of my older students struggle with the basics because grammar isn't taught as stringent as it once was. I decided to try teaching them how to diagram their own sentences in the hopes that this graphic representation of sentences will make a difference. With the help of the Nebo Foundation, I purchased a product from the Grammar-Revolution website that teaches diagramming in 10-15-minute chunks, which is manageable in an 84-minute class. So far I have dragged my students through about 25 percent of the lessons, and most are becoming more competent in identifying the parts of a sentence. At this point, it's too early to tell if it will help their writing (the sentences are still too simple for them to really identify with), but I have great hopes that even this basic understanding of English syntax will help in the long term. Thanks to the Foundation for their support in this endeavor!”

Riverview Elementary – Misty Jones
Misty Jones, a first-grade teacher at Riverview, said, “I am so thrilled to be able to provide my students with some quality headphones for them to record their voices, listen to lessons and follow along with a technology learning environment. Thank you, Thank you, Nebo Education Foundation for making it possible for me to provide an even better learning environment for my first graders.  I appreciate all the hard work and donations that the foundation provides and thank you to all that donate in the community.  With this donation, students are going to record their voices while reading their animal reports, be able to listen to their lessons clearer and without background noise, and be able to have an easier time focusing on language arts and math lessons. Again thank you for your generous donation to our classroom!”
