The Nebo Education Foundation is composed of 20 volunteer board members who live in cities served by Nebo School District. Board members meet each month to review and award grant requests, consider fund-raising avenues and other items that advance the educational opportunities for Nebo School District students.

These grants are funded through the fund-raising efforts of the Nebo Education Foundation board. One fund-raising effort is the annual “Green Fever” golf tournament that helps fund these various grants throughout the year. The “Green Fever” golf tournament will be on Thursday, September 1, 2022. The Nebo Foundation also accepts donations from individuals and businesses to support these grants and other projects.

Congratulations to the following teachers that continue to bless the lives of students.

Maple Grove Middle – Jaimie Dannelly
“Thank you Nebo Education Foundation for funding my grant for flexible seating! My students love having these options and being given a chance to work out their excess energy. This year I have been working extra hard to create a classroom environment that is welcoming, comforting, and fun and flexible seating helps me to accomplish that! This grant will help me to provide more options such as exercise balls, wobble chairs, and desk bands. The students are so excited to get new materials, and one student even said, ‘It’s so much better than sitting in a regular chair and helps me to stay engaged in the lesson!’ Thank you so much!” exclaimed Jaimie Dannelly, English teacher at Maple Grove Middle.

Spring Canyon Middle – April Rockwood
April Rockwood, communications and debate teacher at Spring Canyon Middle, said, “In my sixth- and seventh-grade communications class, we use iPads to produce student podcasts and student videos. Students learn the production process for both formats of media, starting with pre-production, moving to production, and finally editing in post-production. In a technology driven environment, these skills will help them succeed in future endeavors. Last semester was our first attempt at filming our own videos. What we learned is that we needed tripods! I used the generous donation to Nebo School District teachers given by the anonymous donor to purchase eight tripods, but the current cases I have on my iPads do not fit in the tripods. These slimmer cases will allow students to use the tripods and create higher quality videos, while still protecting the iPads. We are all excited to see what they can do!”

“I am excited to purchase a classroom set of the book, Think for Yourself: The Ultimate Guide to Critical Thinking in an Age of Information Overload for my Debate classes with my Nebo Foundation Grant. One of the main objectives of this course is to help students approach difficult topics, learn to understand both sides, and create convincing arguments using evidence and reasoning. I stumbled across this book in our library and love it because it breaks down the information search process into manageable chunks that are geared specifically towards middle school students. These books will be a fantastic resource for helping my students learn to ‘think for themselves!’” exclaimed April Rockwood, communications and debate teacher at Spring Canyon Middle.

Spanish Oaks Elementary – Sherri Peterson
Sherri Peterson, facilitator at Spanish Oaks Elementary, said, “I just want to thank the Nebo Education Foundation for the grant money that was awarded to me this morning.  I am so excited to put it to use by purchasing decodable books that will be used by our five reading technicians with all the students who have been diagnosed as needing Tier 2 interventions in reading.  As we have begun to switch over to this new way of teaching phonological awareness, we are already seeing improvements in the students, and can't wait to have the books to support our lessons. I just told the technicians and they were literally cheering.”

Spring Canyon Middle – John Taylor
“I would like to thank the Nebo Foundation for their support for the performing arts programs at Spring Canyon Middle School!  We are using these funds to purchase ukuleles for our music program.  The ukuleles will serve over 300 students!  A quality music education has always been a priority to the residents of Springville City. We are extremely grateful for a school district that is supportive of the Fine Arts,” said John Taylor, music teacher at Spring Canyon Middle.

Spanish Oaks Elementary – Chrissie Robinson
Chrissie Robinson, second-grade teacher at Spanish Oaks Elementary, said, “I would like to thank all of you for the grant that was given to me to purchase decodable readers. I am really excited to be able to use the money to add on to our new decodable readers library. These books will be used by all Kindergarten and first-grade students, plus any older students that need Tier 2 interventions in reading. Thank you so much for helping us out with this need here at Spanish Oaks.”

Mapleton Elementary – Melody Green
“This grant gives me the opportunity to teach children in my classroom about American Black History through the use of picture books. Picture books allow teachers to teach hard and difficult topics in a way that children can better understand. I appreciate this grant money because it will give me a way to teach these topics and the importance behind them to my students. Being a mixed-race teacher in a school that is 99% white gives me a chance to teach students from a different perspective. Being able to have quality picture books that express this part of history is crucial. It is an honor to be able to teach these significant parts of history to my students,” said Melody Green, third-grade teacher at Mapleton Elementary.
