The Nebo Youth Board, a group of students from our Nebo School District’s six high schools selected to represent their peers from their respected high schools. The Nebo School Board of Education and Secondary Director, Dr. RaShel Shepherd, met with these students on Wednesday, October 5, 2022.

Student leaders were asked multiple questions throughout the hour including some of the following questions.

What are you proud of at your high school?
The student leaders mentioned their sport teams, extracurricular activities, support of students--even if they are having medical procedures, loving everyone, a low amount of bullying, inclusiveness of students, and school spirit.

When asked about any issues with the building of the new high schools, one student leader said, “It hasn’t been too much of a disruption, but the parking is a bit more difficult.”

When asked how teachers make the biggest impact, these were the students’ responses. Teachers are impactful and help us learn when:
“Teachers take time to become friends.”
“Teachers create a positive classroom environment.”
“A teacher knows us by name.”
“Teachers go to our activities like sports or music.”
“I love when teachers actively teach by giving us examples and walking through new concepts step by step.”
“Teachers teach with visuals.”
“Teachers have a positive attitude.”

Other popular activities discussed by the student leaders were College Week and Career Day. Parents and students should be receiving an email about available scholarships for senior students.

What have schools done to help you be prepared past high school?
“They offered Career Day and College Day as well as give us information for advanced schooling.”
“Teachers also talk to us about the Career Pathways available to students.”
“Many teachers talk about our future and various classes we can take so we can be more educated on what we want to do for the rest of our lives.”
“Teachers/counselors give good advice and options for our futures.”
“When they ask us what we want to do when we graduate, it gets us thinking about our future and making plans for our future.”

Number one thing on students’ minds when they walk through the school each morning?
“There can be stressful days. Schools provide access to counselors and to those that believe in me.”
“Earning credits for graduation. I like school.”
“Teachers are advocates for students.”
“Also, we need to be advocates for ourselves.”

The Nebo School Board of Education truly appreciates this type of firsthand information and insights from the students’ perspective. This collaboration ensures that the Nebo School District is aware of students’ concerns and successes. Nebo is passionate about  doing all they can so students have an exceptional educational experience.
