Many of Nebo schools are celebrating National Hispanic Heritage month with assemblies and activities.

Did you know the observation of this important month started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period starting on September 15 and ending on October 15? It was enacted into law on August 17, 1988.

Why does National Hispanic Month start in the middle of September?

The day of September 15 is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September18, respectively.

Some of our schools are celebrating this month with Hispanic Heritage assemblies and activities.

One school celebrated with fingerprint characters while learning that we are all unique. The “I AM” poster will be displayed for the year. It is a great addition for Hispanic Heritage Month.

Hispanic Heritage Month in Payson started off with a great Latino Festival on Saturday, Sept 24 at Peteetneet! Students from Payson Junior High, Payson High School, and other schools, volunteered in the opening ceremony and participated in the Parade of Flags. There are 21 official Spanish-speaking countries, so 21 flags were represented! These students are in Spanish classes, Peer Leadership classes, and ESL classes.  Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated September 15 through October 15.
