The Nebo School Board of Education and the audience started the evening with the Pledge of Allegiance Wednesday night.

Principal Sara Matis presented to the Nebo School Board of Education about Kindness Month at Maple Ridge Elementary.

Next the Nebo School Board of Education members were able to hear from the following students:

Eden Doxey, a fifth-grade student and part of the student council, introduced their project called, “kindness month” in February. One change she saw was that students found kindness in themselves and shared it with others. She said, “I love seeing others be kind. In my opinion this project has been a success and has really improved the mood of our school.”

Landon Holdaway, a fifth-grade student and part of the student council, said, “At the beginning of the year we learned about a kindness strategy called SCI (Smiling, Complementing, and Inviting). When you smile at others they smile back at you. Complementing is when you say something nice to somebody. This has helped me be kind to others.”

Harrison Beck, a fifth-grade student and part of the student council, said, “After I attended a BYU leadership conference, it started making sense why it matters to smile. Now, I’m participating and it feels great to be nice to people. This even worked with a new student that didn’t speak much English. She is fitting in because lots of people smile and compliment her.”

McKinley Rothlisberger, a fifth-grade student and part of the student council, said, “We learned about SCI from a Meg Johnson a speaker at the BYU Leadership conference. She said SCI stands for Spinal Cord Injury but it could stand for Smile, Compliment, and Invite. These are three key ways to changing the atmosphere around our school. If everyone does it, we could change the world.”

Izabella Hanson, a fifth-grade student and part of the student council, stated, “When I honk for kindness it feels good. This activity was about others by welcoming them to school and having a better day. Honk for kindness has changed not only me but my school as well.”

It was a lovely evening where all in attendance made a note to be just a little bit kinder to others. Thank you for this inspiring message Maple Ridge.
